Prepare a floor for painting

Everything you need to know to paint a concrete floor.

Preparing a concrete floor for painting is an important step to ensure that the paint will adhere properly and provide a long-lasting finish. Here are the steps you can follow to prepare a concrete floor for painting:

Clean the surface

Don’t underestimate this step. Preparation is key. Sweep the floor to remove any loose debris, and then scrub the surface with an industrial scrubber and pressure washer, applying and allowing to soak a concrete cleaner or degreaser to remove any dirt, oil, or grease. Rinse the floor thoroughly with water and allow it to dry completely.

Check for cracks and holes

Check the floor for any cracks, holes, or other imperfections that may need to be repaired before painting. Use a concrete patching compound to fill in any holes or cracks, and then allow the patch to dry according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Smooth the surface

Once the patching compound has dried, use a fine-grit sandpaper to smooth out any rough spots or high points on the floor. You can use a floor buffer or grinder to further smooth the surface if needed.

Etch the surface

Use an acid etching solution to create a rough texture on the surface of the concrete. This will help the paint to adhere better. Apply an acid wash with the use of an industrial scrubber. Not only will the acid be applied, but agitated with the abrasive brushes. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for the etching solution and be sure to wear gloves and protective eyewear.

Rinse the surface

Once the surface has been etched, rinse the floor thoroughly with water and allow it to dry completely before painting.

Apply a primer Apply a coat of concrete primer to the floor using a roller or brush. The primer will help the paint to adhere better and will also provide a more even finish.

Paint the surface

Once the primer has dried, you can apply the paint to the floor using a roller or brush. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for the paint and be sure to allow the paint to dry completely before walking on it.

Painted flooring can include non-slip.

By following these steps, you can ensure that your concrete floor is properly prepared for painting, which will help to ensure a long-lasting, durable finish.
